We have a wonderful and active bell ringing team at St Mary’s Shalford – very friendly and informal, and always keen to welcome new recruits or anybody wishing to give bell-ringing a try.
Come along to a Monday evening bell-ringing practice 8-9.30pm St Mary’s church.
See below for more details from our ringing team.
You’ll have heard of Dead Ringers, but why not be a live one? You don’t have to be Hercules or Einstein, Fatima Whitbread or Hannah Fry to give it a try. Cooler than crosswords, smarter than Pilates, those of us already hooked find that ringing delivers a rewarding blend of exercise, comradeship, chocolates, and fun. We are always pleased to introduce new joiners (and indeed carpenters) to the band.
If you’ve not rung before but you’re up for it you can have one-to-one teaching sessions on your own and at a time of your choosing rather than in the middle of a practice night. Practice nights are on Mondays from 8.00 to 9.30 PM and you can join in if and when you feel confident to do so. Contact Sally on 07771 923368 or sas@ringsoft.co.uk.
Expert tuition is free but if you decide to become a regular then the deal is that in return you turn up to do half an hour’s ringing from 9.30 on Sunday mornings. Whether you’re a Royalist, a Roundhead or a Rotarian you’ll learn how to regulate your bong, though we all make a hash of it occasionally. Attending church services is not a requirement of course, though all are always welcome to stay for the welcoming services for all at St Mary’s too. All faiths or none are always welcome.
On the social side we typically have two outings a year where we travel to two towers in the morning, have a pub lunch, then ring at two more towers in the afternoon. Whether or not we actually perform better post-pub or we just think we do is a moot point. At other times we also make a few visits to local towers to ring their bells and have a coffee afterwards. On practice nights those who wish to usually refresh themselves in The Seahorse.
To get a flavour of what goes on without commitment, by all means join us in the tower on a Monday evening at 8.00 and see for yourself.
Please phone Sally Schupke, Shalford Tower Captain – St Mary’s, if you’re interested in joining or trying out bell-ringing: Tel: 07771 923368
