PCC Update 1st April 2026
Following the death of Bishop Andrew, Bishop of Guildford, on Tuesday 3 March, a very moving funeral Service with beautiful music and poignant tributes was held at Guildford Cathedral on Monday 23 March. Many members of Bishop Andrew’s family participated in the Service. Archbishop Sarah Mullally was present and gave The Blessing. Both Ann Thomas and I felt privileged to be invited. Our prayers from St Mary’s and the Parish go out to Bishop Andrew’s wife, Beverly, and the family. The funeral can be viewed on the Cathedral website.
Here at St Mary’s, we continue to make progress with the selection process for a new vicar. On 19 March, the PCC attended a Section 11 meeting chaired by the Area Dean where our Parish Profile and our Advertisement were approved. Representatives were elected for the selection panel in June when we shall be interviewing.
News from our team of bellringers is that starting the week following Easter they are going to take advantage of the warmer weather to repaint the bell frame. This means they will not be ringing before Services for a few weeks.
Our Services for Holy Week can be viewed here.. In addition, Canon Angela and Revd Michael will be leading 30 minute Quiet Reflections at 7pm in St Mary’s on 30 and 31 March and 1 April. I do hope you can join us at some of our Services during this sacred time in the Christian calendar. Children are especially welcome at our Easter Sunday Service with Egg Hunts.
Meanwhile, Ann Thomas and I wish you all a very Happy Easter.

Building repairs update
We continue to make progress. We have applied to Guildford Borough Council for planning permission and to the Diocesan Advisory Committee (DAC) for permission to change the covering of the spire from copper sheet to wooden shingles (like roofing tiles but made of wood). The DAC will decide at their next meeting on 2 April. We have also invited three building contractors to submit quotations for carrying out the work. These quotations are due by 3 April. Once we receive the quotations, we will be in a position to apply for grant funding. If we are successful, the funding should come through quickly and we will be able to start planning the steps we need to take for the works to begin.
